Teaching Our Children About God’s Love

We are about to start the Month of Love, February. February festivities provide us with the opportunity to teach our children and teens about the greatest love of all, God's Love. Teaching them about God's unconditional love is a great gift we can give them and will bring numerous blessings into their lives. It is not always easy to teach them about God's love because we mostly hear about earthly love, and God's unconditional love goes above all love and is something our limited minds cannot fully understand.

Aware of the importance of teaching our children about God's love, we want to share some points that can make your children understand God's, unconditional love:

GOD LOVE US IN DIFFERENT WAYS- You can start by showing them the different ways that God loves us. He loves us as a father, as a friend, as a doctor, as a counselor, and as Savior. God is faithful, wiser, and patient can work miracles in your favor and is mightier than any superhero. He loves unconditionally, even when we do not think we deserve His love.

GOD'S LOVE GOES BEYOND ANY LOVE- God's love is not just a saying; God shows us that He loves us daily! He showed His love by sending His only child to die for us. He is always willing to forgive us. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 (NIV) He is always by our side and listens to us. This is the confidence we have in approaching God, that if we ask anything according to his will, He hears us. 1 John 5:14.(NIV) He cares for us and gives us peace. He provides for us according to His will. His love is not boastful or envious. His love is patient and is not self-seeking. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, is not self-seeking, is not easily angered, and keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8.

GOD LOVED US FIRST- God showed us His love by giving up His only son to redeem us. As them, would you give up what you love most for someone else? Would you give your life to save someone? Making them think about their answer to these questions would help them understand that God's love is like no other.

There's no better way to show them God's love than by sharing it with them that God's love is like no other; that is greater than any love, even the love you have for them.

If your child is younger, here's an activity I love by Mimmy Patrick from Ministry to Children.com called God's love-Cookie comparison. Here are her instructions:

I love this tasty demonstration. Buy a giant cookie and have it decorated with the words “God’s Love” in icing. Buy a pack of regular-sized chocolate chip cookies. Take one out of the box. Before class, arrange the giant cookie and the single cookie on two separate platters. Keep the cookies covered and talk to kids about different kinds of love. Talk about how parents love each other, how children love parents, and how pet owners love their pets. Share about whom you love and how they make you feel. Of course, keep everything PG! Then it is time for the big reveal. Show the two platters. Tell them that the small cookie is the love we have for each other and all the kinds of love you talked about. Show them the giant cookie. Tell the children this is God’s love. Explain to them that God’s love is deeper, bigger, and better than any other kind of love you can receive. Then eat the cookies, after the blessing!

Teaching your children about God's love is something of every day. Be on the lookout for ways to make it easier for them to understand His love. Just opening our eyes every day is a sign of His infinite love!
