More than School Supplies:Preparing Your Child for the Start of the New Academic Year

Back-to-school preparation often focuses on everything we can see: new backpacks, school supplies, uniforms, lunch boxes, and the tools our children need to succeed academically. But there is another set of tools that is just as important:  the emotional tools that help children manage stress, build confidence, handle challenges, and believe in themselves. We can ask ourselves: Are we only preparing our children for the classroom, or are we also preparing their hearts and minds for the experiences they will face? The first days and weeks of school can bring excitement, but they can also bring anxiety, uncertainty, and fear for many children. New teachers, new classmates, academic expectations, and changes in routine can feel overwhelming. Experts emphasize that children thrive when they feel safe, supported, understood, and confident in their ability to face challenges.

Here are some ways we can help our children build emotional strength for the new school year:

• Prepare emotionally, not just practically. Before school begins, have conversations about their feelings. Ask open ended questions like, “What are you excited about?” or “Is there anything that worries you?” This helps children recognize and express their emotions instead of keeping them inside.

• Validate their feelings. Avoid dismissing worries by saying, “Don’t worry” or “It’s not a big deal.” Instead, let them know their feelings are normal and that you are there to help them work through them.

• Teach them that challenges are part of learning. Remind them that making mistakes does not mean failure. Mistakes are opportunities to grow, learn, and become more confident.

• Build their confidence through encouragement. Focus on their effort, perseverance, and progress rather than only the results. Statements like “I am proud of how hard you tried” help children develop resilience.

• Help them develop coping strategies. Teach them simple tools they can use when they feel overwhelmed, such as taking deep breaths, pausing before reacting, asking for help, or breaking a difficult task into smaller steps.

• Create a calm and predictable routine. Children feel more secure when they know what to expect. A consistent morning and evening routine can reduce stress and help them feel prepared.

• Encourage independence. Allow children to make age appropriate decisions, solve problems, and take responsibility for their belongings and schoolwork. Independence builds confidence and a sense of capability.

• Remind them they are not alone. Encourage your child to connect with teachers, counselors, friends, and trusted adults when they need support. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

• Celebrate who they are. Every child learns differently and grows at their own pace. Avoid comparisons with siblings, classmates, or friends. Help them understand that their journey is unique.

• Create a safe space at home. Let your child know that home is a place where they can share their successes, frustrations, fears, and questions without judgment.

• Teach them positive self talk. Help them replace thoughts like “I can’t do this” with “I can try,” “I can learn,” and “I can ask for help when I need it.”

• Encourage balance. Academic success is important, but so are sleep, play, friendships, creativity, and time to relax. A child’s emotional well-being is the foundation for their overall success.

Providing our children with school supplies helps prepare them for their academic responsibilities, but equipping them with emotional tools prepares them for life. A new backpack may carry their books, but confidence, resilience, and emotional strength are what will help them carry the challenges they encounter along the way. This school year, let’s not only ask, “Do they have everything they need for school?” Let’s also ask, “Do they feel supported, capable, and loved?” The greatest tools we can give our children are not only the ones they carry in their hands but the ones they carry within themselves.
