Be the Friend Who Sharpens

Imagine waking up tomorrow on a deserted island, surrounded by nothing but the ocean, with no one else in sight. At first, you might think it could be peaceful, but after a while, the silence would become overwhelming. There would be no one to laugh with, no one to share your stories with, no one to celebrate your victories, no one to comfort you when you hurt, and no one to remind you that you are not alone. We were never meant to journey through life by ourselves. God, in His wisdom and love, gave us the gift of relationships: people to walk beside us, share life’s moments with us, challenge us, encourage us, and help us grow. Among those precious gifts are our friends.

Friends can make life more meaningful through genuine connections, shared experiences, laughter, encouragement, and support. Think about your closest friends and imagine your life without them. It can be heartbreaking. True friends become like chosen family. They celebrate our victories, stand beside us during difficult moments, and help us discover strengths we may not have recognized in ourselves. But friendship is more than simply having fun together. Proverbs 27:17 tells us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” God gives us friends who can help shape who we are, and He calls us to do the same for them. A true friend doesn’t simply agree with everything we do or encourage us to follow the crowd. A true friend wants what is best for us, even when that means lovingly challenging us, correcting us, encouraging us to make better choices, and pointing us back to Christ.

While we grow and mature, we begin to understand that friendship is not simply about how many people we know or how many friends we have. Genuine friendship is built on trust, loyalty, respect, honesty, forgiveness, encouragement, and mutual support. Most importantly, our friendships should help us grow in Christ. The right friends can encourage us to pray when we are struggling, remind us of God’s promises when we feel discouraged, celebrate our growth, and help us stay accountable to what is right. In the same way, we should strive to be that kind of friend for others. Here are some ways we can intentionally sharpen one another and grow in Christ:

  1. Pray for each other and, whenever possible, pray together. Ask your friend how you can pray for them and remind them that they can bring everything to God.

  2. Encourage each other with God’s Word. When someone is discouraged, share a Bible verse that can give them hope, strength, or wisdom.

  3. Lead by example. Let your actions reflect Christ through kindness, patience, honesty, humility, forgiveness, and compassion.

  4. Encourage wise choices. Don’t encourage a friend to do something simply because everyone else is doing it. Help one another choose what honors God.

  5. Lovingly correct one another. A true friend cares enough to speak the truth with kindness when someone is making a choice that could hurt them or pull them away from God.

  6. Celebrate each other’s growth. Notice when your friend is becoming more patient, responsible, courageous, kind, or faithful. Celebrate what God is doing in their life.

  7. Help each other when life gets difficult. Sometimes sharpening someone means simply showing up, listening, offering a helping hand, or reminding them that they don’t have to face a difficult moment alone.

  8. Keep each other accountable. Encourage one another to follow through on commitments, make good choices, treat others well, and live according to God’s Word.

  9. Forgive and give grace. Friends will make mistakes. Instead of holding grudges, learn to apologize, forgive, and allow one another to grow.

10. Point each other toward Jesus. When a friend is discouraged, confused, or making difficult choices, don’t just point them toward your own opinions. Point them toward God’s Word, prayer, and Christ.

This week, take a moment to thank God for the friends He has placed in your life. Then ask yourself an important question: Am I the kind of friend who sharpens others, or am I simply looking for friends who make me feel good? Friendship is a gift, but it is also a responsibility. We are called to love one another, encourage one another, and help one another grow. You don’t have to spend a lot of money or plan something extravagant to celebrate a friendship. A handwritten note, a thoughtful message, a homemade gift, an invitation for coffee, a sweet treat, or simply taking the time to tell someone, “I’m thankful God put you in my life,” can mean so much. Most importantly, celebrate your friends by being a friend who helps them become stronger in Christ. Because when iron sharpens iron, both pieces become stronger, and when we help one another grow in Christ, we become a stronger Warrior Family.
