On Sunday, we will be celebrating Mother's Day, and this got me thinking about how alike a dedicated mother's love is with God's love for us. A mother's love for her children is unconditional and everlasting. No matter how old we are or how you have been with her, Mom will still love us no matter what, just like God's love for us. A beautiful quote from Jeffrey Holland says: "No love...comes closer to approximating the pure love of Jesus Christ than the selfless love a devoted mother has for her child." Wow, what a blessing it is that our love as mothers get compared to the extraordinary love of Jesus Christ.
Here are some ways in which the love of a dedicated mother reflects God's love for us:
Both loves are everlasting-Lamentations 3:22-The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never end.
Both are willing to sacrifice- John 3:16- 16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
They comfort us with their love- As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you, and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.” Isaiah 66:13.
Both loves are Patient and Kind-4 Love is patient; love is kind. It does not envy, does not boast, it is not proud. 1 Corinthians 13:4.
They discipline with love- The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10.
They love us even in disappointment- But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. Psalm 86:15.
They have many hats- God is our healer, provider, comforter, counselor, and many more. Our mothers serve as doctors, counselors, teachers, cooks, and many more.
Their love is fruitful- 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentlenesses, and self-control. Against such things, there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23.
A mother would lay down her life to save her children. She intercedes for them and prays tirelessly for their wellbeing. We came from God, and our mothers were the medium to give us life. We must never forget from where we came. Deuteronomy 32:18 says, "You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot the God who gave you birth." Like God, a mother protects their offspring courageously. "Like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them aloft. The Lord alone led him; no foreign god was with him." Deuteronomy 32: 11-12.
A mother's love never changes even when we grow old, and so does God's love for us. Even to your old age and gray hairs, I am he. I am he who will sustain you. I have made you, and I will carry you. I will sustain you, and I will rescue you. Isaiah 46:4. A mother rarely will forget their children, but if she does, God will never forsake us. “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! Isaiah 49:15.
I know that not all mothers are dedicated, loving mothers, but bad mothers are rare, and in the end, a mother can fail you, but God never will. Most mothers deserve more credit than they get. Even though most moms are multitasking and loving sometimes, we do not appreciate what they do as we should. As we celebrate Mother's Day, honor and bless your mom, grandmother, or the woman that embodies that motherly figure in your life by doing something for them and making them feel special. They deserve all your love and gratefulness. And remember, you may lack that kind of motherly love, but you will always have God's love, and His love is the best of all!
